Staying Strong How to Prevent Getting the Flu

As the weather gets colder, we tend to stay inside where it is warm. That is when flu season comes in full swing. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent getting the flu and reduce the risk of deadly outcomes if you do get sick. Whether you are perfectly healthy or someone with a comprised immune system, everyone should take steps to protect yourself and family and friends during the flu season.

Your first line of defense against the flu is getting vaccinated. The CDC recommends that anyone six month or older should be getting the vaccine. If you have questions about anything you should always reach out to your doctor if your concerned about getting the vaccine. While no vaccine is one hundred percent effective, getting the vaccine can help if do you catch the flu and reduce the dangerous complications, including death. Healthcare providers recommend you should get your updated Covid-19 vaccine at the same time. Additionally, washing your hands regularly throughout the day is important as germs live on every surface we touch. While we cannot control what others do for personal hygiene habits, we can make sure we are taking every step we can take to keep ourselves from getting sick.

Another crucial step we can take to protect ourselves is to maintain a safe distance from those who are sick, currently developing symptoms, or recovering from the flu. If you need to care for someone who is sick, such as bringing them food or providing help, wear a mask and politely ask that they do the same while you are in their home. Your overall health is important as well.  Make sure you are getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet in fruits and vegetables, and exercising regularly. Doing these habits will help strengthen your immune system and reduce your symptoms if you do get sick.

While flu season is always going to come around, it does not mean you are going to get sick. By following these essential preventive steps, you can reduce your risk of catching the flu. Always remember, protecting yourself is not just about personal health, it also helps protect everyone in your family and community.
