Occupational Therapy Month 2021

Occupational Therapists and their assistants are part of a vitally important profession that helps people of all ages be able to do the things they want to do using everyday activities. Every year throughout the month of April, we celebrate all the great work occupational therapists have done with National Occupational Therapy Month. During this month, the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) wants to spread awareness about the importance of the Occupational Therapy profession.

Occupational therapy is a form of therapy for those recovering from physical or mental illness. Before any therapeutic activities are administered, an occupational therapist has the patient evaluated. After the patient is fully evaluated, the therapist can then form plan of care and rehabilitation. During this plan, patients are rehabilitated through activities that simulate everyday activities. For example, a patient may be told to twist a tool through hand putty to simulate turning a key. Each activity is specifically designed to help patients live their lives to their fullest ability regardless of disability, injury, or illness.

National Occupational Therapy Month began in 1980. With the AOTA having an annual conference where occupational therapists from all over can connect. This brought in a holistic and customized approach to evaluations, interventions, and outcomes to help people in need. Offering specialized support and services to people of all ages and backgrounds that only occupational therapy can provide. Thus, allowing children with disabilities to participate in school and in social situations and aiding older adults to stay as independent as possible.
