If you are forcing yourself to workout even though you did not get enough sleep last night, you might want to think twice. Exercise is great for your health but if you are exercising with no sleep on a constant basis, research has found that you might not be as healthy as you think. It turns out that if you are constantly working out with zero sleep it might do more harm than good.
Sleep is the foundation for everything we do. When you do not sleep, your body is not recovering from the stressful physical activity you did that day. Work, errands, kids and preparing dinner can all take up time in your day and can be exhausting. You may simply not have the time to squeeze in a workout, so you trade your sleep for exercise. There is no denying that exercise is good for you…when you are well rested. However, when you work out without allowing your body to fully recover from muscle stress every day, you might run into some problems. As a result, you may start to feel like you got hit by a truck every day and you will end up dreading your workouts.
The way your body reacts to exercising on sleep deprivation does depend on how intense your workout is. You might not want to lift heavy weights on poor sleep. However, if you really feel the need to exercise, going for a 30-minute walk followed by stretching will take less of a toll on your body. This is because it is a light form of exercise that really does not add too much stress on the muscles. Although walking may seem like a viable option, the truth is you really do not have time for both sleep and exercise. There may be times in our hectic lives for both, but if life does not have time – always prioritize sleep.
The reality of modern society is that sometimes we do not have time in our busy schedule to get a little “me time” for a workout, but this does not mean you have to completely sacrifice exercise. It is crucial to try to schedule a workout during your downtime. Even finding 15 of 30 minutes to exercise here or there can make a big impact on your health.
