Posted on in Industry News, News

Running is one of the healthiest and most natural exercises you can do as a human being. Unfortunately, not everyone can continue to run without complaining about having aches and pains. This is where doing Pilates comes in. By doing Pilates in conjunction with running, you will be able to run better without injury.

Why Pilates is Good for RunnersWhen it comes to getting injuries during running, most can be attributed to overuse, poor posture and too much high intensity. Pilates compliments running by offering very low impact exercises. It strengthens your core muscles and does not place any further stress on your body. Doing Pilates also creates great foundations in terms of flexibility, coordination and breathing. Which prevents injuries during the run and promotes a faster recovery period. Below are some Pilates moves you can do for a better run:

Spine Stretch

The Spine Stretch is a great Pilates exercise that improves the mobility of your spine and the back of your legs. To begin, start by sitting down on the floor with your legs stretched slightly more than shoulder-width apart. Then, place your hands on a CanDo® Inflatable Exercise Ball of your choice. Put pressure on the CanDo® Inflatable Ball and roll into a forward bend. The pressure of the ball will activate your abdominal muscles and thus gives your back more stretch. Repeat up to four times.

Side Plank

The Side Plank exercise will help improve the strength and endurance in your legs. Thus, improving the stability and balance in your running. To begin, lie sideways on the CanDo® Inflatable Exercise Ball of your choice. Then, extend your arm so that it is touching the floor. Extend your right arm outward in front of you and keep your legs straight. Make sure that the ball does not roll out away from you and hold the position for a few seconds. Then repeat this same exact stretch on your right side.

Doing some Pilates before or after a run can really help with your running technique. You will be able to run further and faster while also avoiding any running related injuries.
